. You will define system-level interfaces, drive cross-functional trade-offs, and ensure architectural coherence from concept through production launch. Beyond the desk, you will develop and mentor engineering talent both internally and at supplier partners, build and cultivate a world-class supplier base, and serve as the integrating force that ensures every subsystem works in harmony to deliver world-class interior systems. This role is based out of our Tesla Engineering, Shanghai facility and will require close collaboration with global Tesla engineering teams. What You'll Do Define and own the end-to-end systems architecture for interior systems including power distribution, control strategies, and signal routing across all interior subsystems. Lead discussions and facilitate trade-off analyses among engineers spanning electrical, mechanical, firmware, manufacturing, and functional safety domains. Develop and maintain system block diagrams, signal flow diagrams, and interface control documents (ICDs) that define the boundaries and interactions between mechanical, electrical, optical, and software subsystems. Lead the development of system-level DFMEA, HARA, and functional safety analyses including ASIL decomposition, functional safety concepts (FSC), and technical safety concepts (TSC) in accordance with ISO 26262. Ensure system architectures are compliant with applicable regulatory standards including ECE regulations and FMVSS requirements, and drive compliance considerations into early-phase design decisions. Architect systems with a deep understanding of mechanical and kinematic/dynamic principles including load paths, linkage design, and mechanism behavior under real-world operating conditions. Drive cross-functional decision-making that bridges mechanical design, low voltage electronics, firmware, optical, haptics, and validation disciplines to deliver the optimal balance of form, function, performance, and cost. Apply systems engineering principles to decompose high-level vehicle objectives into quantifiable system-level requirements with full traceability using tools such as Polarion or DOORS. Develop and manage a supplier base capable of executing complex interior systems. Direct supplier engineering development, conduct design reviews, and ensure suppliers meet Tesla's architectural intent and quality standards. Mentor and develop engineering talent internally and at supplier partners, fostering first-principles thinking and systems-level problem solving across the team. Follow a V-model systems development lifecycle from requirements definition through system integration, verification, and validation, collaborating closely with validation and reliability engineers to ensure architecture decisions are testable and meet durability targets. Maintain all required product development documentation and manage requirements, issues, and program execution using JIRA and Polarion. Communicate technical risks, architectural decisions, and program status to cross-functional stakeholders with clarity and precision. What You'll Bring Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, with a strong mechanical design foundation. Demonstrated track record of systems architecture ownership across multiple full lifecycle vehicle programs (minimum 3 programs from concept through production launch). First principles, physics-based thinker and problem solver with the ability to navigate problems spanning mechanical, controls, and electrical domains simultaneously. Strong command of mechanical and kinematic/dynamic systems including load path analysis, linkage design, mechanism dynamics, and tolerance stack-up. Demonstrated ability to develop and own system-level DFMEA, HARA, ASIL decomposition, and functional safety artifacts (FSC, TSC, FMEDA). Familiarity with ISO 26262 functional safety standard and its application to automotive systems architecture. Working knowledge of ECE regulations and FMVSS requirements as they apply to interior systems and components. Proficiency in systems engineering artifacts including requirements decomposition, traceability, interface control documents, system block diagrams, and signal flow diagrams. Proficiency in CATIA V5/V6 is required. Advanced surface modeling is a plus Proficiency in MATLAB and Python for analysis, modeling, and simulation. Working experience with JIRA for program execution and Polarion for requirements management and traceability. Experience with Altium or similar PCBA design tools is a plus. Understanding of low voltage electronics, power distribution architectures, and common communication protocols (CAN, LIN, I2C, SPI, etc.) and their system-level implications. Understanding of latest interior technologies including lighting, capacitive touch, time of flight, force touch, haptics, and smart surfaces at a system integration level. Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing principles including GD&T, assembly, and dimensional engineering. Demonstrated people management aptitude with the ability to lead through influence, gauge talent, and mentor engineers across disciplines and organizations. Exceptional critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Fluency in English is required. 10+ years of experience in automotive interior systems or a closely related domain.
